Hardware Condition Guide

Hardware condition terms affect price, warranty, risk, and delivery expectations. Use this guide to compare new, open-box, tested pre-owned, refurbished, working-pull, and for-parts inventory.

Computer hardware organized by condition for inspection

Condition language matters in business hardware procurement. Two listings can use the same model name but represent very different risk, packaging, accessories, warranty expectations, and total cost. This guide explains the practical categories TBR Trade Group uses when discussing supply options.

New

Factory new hardware is unused and typically arrives in original retail or manufacturer packaging when available. Availability and warranty terms depend on the brand, channel, and order details.

Open-box

Open-box hardware may have been opened, inspected, returned, or handled but should not show meaningful operational wear. Packaging can vary, so we confirm what is included when quoting.

Tested Pre-Owned

Tested pre-owned hardware has been previously deployed or handled and is checked before sale. It is often the practical choice when buyers need value, speed, or discontinued models.

Refurbished

Refurbished hardware has been inspected, cleaned, tested, and prepared for resale. Refurbishment can vary by item category, so condition notes should be part of the quote.

Pulled from Working System

This means the component came from a working environment or system pull. Buyers should still confirm testing scope, cosmetic condition, and warranty terms before ordering.

For Parts or Repair

For-parts hardware is not sold as fully functional inventory. It may be suitable for repair operations, parts harvesting, or experienced buyers who understand the risk.

Best Practice for Buyers

Ask for the condition category, testing status, warranty or DOA terms, packaging method, accessories included, and whether substitutions are allowed. Clear expectations reduce delays and returns.
